The car battery is an important part of the electrical setup of the automobile. If it is used over time, its performance tends to degrade, resulting in car battery problems. The two most common car battery problems are normal wear and tear and extreme weather conditions. Obviously, wear and tear stems from excessive use, especially hard use or reckless use. For example, a battery that is left on, say by someone forgetting to turn off the headlights, will become fully drained and will require a jumpstart. Jumping a car battery puts excess strain on the battery and damages battery life. Likewise, extreme temperature shifts can also cause car battery problems. Certain batteries are designed for specific weather conditions. A battery designed for use in a hot area may not work very well in a colder climate. Generally speaking, a minimum of 600 cold cranking amps is necessary to start a car in a colder climate.
To avoid car battery problems, do a periodic check on the cables and terminals for any dirt or chemical accumulation. Check for any car battery corrosion or loose connections, which are one of the main reasons for the battery not able to hold the needed power. If you find some dirt or accumulation on the terminals and cables, immediately wipe it off with a cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water.
